Well, that was something. Whether you loved 2016 or hated it- it’s gone now. With the start of a new year, we have so many things to look forward to, and some things are are glad to leave behind. 2016 was a HUGE year for us, making probably the biggest change of our life (moving to the West Coast) but we are SO happy we did. This came with lots of changes and of course ups and downs (mostly ups!) but this means plenty of growth and new opportunities for us. Keep your eyes peeled for more changes on the horizon!
Just a few months ago we started a new series of weekly roundups or our “BALM faves” of the week so we thought it would be appropriate to throw in some of our BALM faves of the year! Here’s what we loved in 2016 and what we could do without in 2017.
All the fun details were found on the sleeve this year. Bell sleeves, ruffles, embroidery, and frills were all a hit, even though we found it impossible to keep guac out of our bell sleeves! One of the most fun things about being a “fashion blogger” is that you get to have fun with fashion and really try out all the trends. Some are hits and many are misses but it’s always a good laugh when you get a miss ; ) We don’t see detailed sleeves going anywhere in the New Year so stayed tuned to see some styling tips on the blog!
Red wine ice cream, chlorophyll water, bone broth, and turmeric everything were what consumed us in 2016. Avocado toast is so 2015. More restaurants are working to be more Instagramable (which is good for us!) so keep your eyes peeled. We’re just hoping to make it to Raclette before 2018.
Athleisure trends took a step to the next level this year. SO many fashion brands added athletic wear to their lines, making this a very easy and approachable trend (although, we think this one is here to stay). I mean Victoria Beckham wore Stan Smiths on the runway at NYFW. This trend is so easy to wear; most of us were doing it without knowing so. Getting away with leggings without working out? Say no more.
social media apps
Instagram had lots of changes in 2016- most we disagreed with initially, and some we’re still not happy about. From the algorithm changes to Instastories, to Insta Live, and a logo change and disabling comments; more changes are on their way. Our favorite change came in February with the ability to toggle between multiple accounts. Long gone are the painful days of having to log in and out of your personal/business accounts. We’re also excited about the launch of retail for some business accounts (and [hopefully] eventually, bloggers). Right now, IG is testing with some brands like Kate Spade and Warby Parker where you can shop directly from the IG photo. Also, remember the flow of “turn on post notifications” in your news feed?
Snapchat really blew up in 2016 and gave us all the perfect selfie. Whether you rocked the puppy filter or the pretty filter, you just can’t hate. Even the founder of Snapchat proposed to his then gf, Miranda Kerr with an adorable geofilter.
We could have survived on the Kardashian’s drama alone. I mean, T.Swift vs. Kimye was pretty unreal but we’re kind over the high school games of Rob and Chy…like we can do without that. Too many awful breakups that we’re going to leave in 2016- Naomi and Liev- come on!? Justin and Selena’s heartbreaking drama and IG battle had us really holding on for any possibility of them getting back together. We have our fingers crossed for another secret Beyonce album to be dropped in 2017 #pleaseBey.
As far as fashion goes we’re leaving behind lace-up bodysuits, fur lined loafers, and cold shoulder tops in 2016. We’re also going to work on more poses other than the *touch the hair and glance down at the ground*, promise! What trends do you hope disappear in 2017 and what do you hope to see more of?
Here are some of our favorites looks from 2016:
